Madeleine (Korbelová) Albright was the first women to hold the position of United States Secretary of State. She was born in Czechoslovakia in 1937, but left with her parents for England where she spent the duration of the Second World War.
Following the war her family returned to Czechoslovakia and her diplomat father was posted to Communist-governed Yugoslavia. Madeleine was sent to school in Switzerland. After Yugoslavia fell to the communists the family emigrated to the U.S. arriving at Ellis Island, New York, on November 11, 1948.
In a keynote speech at the “Celebrating Inspiration” luncheon in 2014, Albright expressed the opinion: “There is a special place in hell for women who don’t support other women.” That comment was not received with as much enthusiasm in 2016 when she voiced it again during a campaign rally for presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
